For vet practice owners and managers

When something doesn't sit right, ask Hackles.

Plain-English answers on staff, contracts, clients and compliance, built on Australian law and written for the way vet practices actually run. If your question needs a lawyer, Hackles will tell you, and put you in touch with one.

Example question: One of our associates has resigned and says she's starting at a clinic 5km away. Her contract has a restraint clause. Can we actually rely on it? Example answer: Possibly. Restraints aren't automatically enforceable, and whether this one holds depends on its distance and time limits, her client relationships and how the clause is drafted. Hackles suggests a lawyer review it before you write to her.

Why Hackles?

You'll know the look. Before a dog does anything at all, the hair along its back lifts. Nothing has happened yet. It's simply picked up that something is off.

Most legal problems in a practice start the same way. A contract clause that reads a bit strangely. A conversation with a team member that's starting to drift. A client email with an edge to it.

Hackles is where you bring that feeling. Early, while it's still a quick question and not yet a dispute.

We're not here to start fights. We're here so you rarely need to have one.

How it works

  1. Ask it like you'd ask a colleague.

No legal terms needed. Paste in the clause, the email or the roster and say what's bothering you.

  2. Get a straight answer.

Grounded in Australian law and the Animal Care and Veterinary Services Award, with the reasoning laid out so you can follow it.

  3. Know when to call someone.

If your situation needs formal advice, Hackles says so plainly and can pass the details to Fuse Law, so you don't start from scratch.

Chris Burrell, founder of Hackles

I've seen it again and again in vet practices. A problem starts small, and by the time it reaches a lawyer, it's bigger and more expensive than it ever needed to be.

Hackles helps owners and managers check a concern as soon as it comes up, in plain English and with the source it relies on. Some questions it can answer outright. Others need a lawyer, and it will tell you so.

I run Fuse Law, a firm with a strong focus on the veterinary industry, and Fuse Law stands behind Hackles. I built it because the people running clinics deserve better than guesswork.

About Fuse Law

Common questions

Is this legal advice?
No. Hackles gives general legal information to help you understand where you stand. When your circumstances need advice, it tells you, and Fuse Law can take it from there.
Is legal advice included?
No. Your Hackles subscription covers legal information only. If you need advice, Fuse Law will confirm the scope and cost with you first, and that work is billed separately by Fuse Law. Hackles is a Fuse Law product, so we have an interest in both.
Who can see my questions?
You, and no one else unless you choose to share. Hackles is hosted in Australia, and the AI behind it runs inside Amazon Web Services in Sydney and Melbourne, so the AI developer never sees what you type. Your questions aren’t used to train AI, and you can delete any conversation at any time. Fuse Law only sees a conversation if you send it to us for advice.
Is it only for employment issues?
Staff questions come up most, but Hackles also covers clients, suppliers, leases and practice ownership.
